Writing Online Placement Exam
We ask every student who enters Newman to provide us with a writing sample. This serves two purposes: One is to give us a starting point in tracking our progress in teaching writing. It will tell us how well we are doing in improving your writing skills when we collect samples of your writing in the future.
More importantly, however, we are dedicated to your success as a student. To ensure success, we need your help with placing you in the appropriate writing class. We want to know more about you than just your test scores.
Please read the following and respond sincerely and in your best academic prose. Your response should be a
of 750 words. You may use the spell-check and grammar-check on your word processor before copying and pasting your response below, but do not use any other outside sources. This should take you no more than two hours. Your honesty serves you well in this process as this sample is used to place you in the appropriate writing class.
Respond to the following:
Describe your experience with writing thus far. Helpful information might include the number, length, and types of papers you wrote in high school, how many books you were required to read, whether you read much outside of school and whether or not you like to read, whether or not you like to write outside of school, to what degree your teachers have been helpful or not with your writing, how easily writing comes for you, what successes and failures you have had with writing, how confident you are about the rules and conventions of writing, and so on. Next, identify what you consider your strongest writing skill to be. Then identify any major weaknesses you think you have in writing. Finally, indicate whether you would place yourself into an advanced class, a regular class, or a class with tutoring available.
